The shortest and most guaranteed pathway exists for internationally qualified nurses to gain Australian Nursing Registration. If you are relatively new to Australia, you may not be familiar with this option. Let us introduce you to this guaranteed pathway and take you through the steps to becoming a registered nurse in Australia.
Outcome Bases Assessment (OBA) is the guaranteed pathway that can fulfil your dreams of becoming an Australian Registered Nurse. It assesses your overseas nursing qualifications and/or work experience to pave your path to becoming an Australian Registered Nurse.
In 2019, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) transitioned into a new model to assess internally qualified nurses. OBA forms an integral part of this new model and assesses whether you, as an international nurse, possess the knowledge and experience and meet the same healthcare standards as Australian graduate nurses.
The first step to embark on this journey is to complete a free online self-assessment check. You then need to attend the orientation and build your portfolio. Then comes the most important part: the OBA.
OBA is a two-stage assessment process and consists of two key exams known as the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) and the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
NCLEX-RN is a standardized test introduced by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) to determine if a candidate is ready to be licensed as an entry-level nurse in Australia. This MCQ format computer-based exam is the cognitive assessment of internationally qualified nurses and midwives (IQNMS). You must pass this test to move to the second stage of OBA – OSCE.
OSCE is a clinical exam designed to assess the knowledge, skills and competence of future medical professionals at the graduate-level nurse or midwife from an Australian NMBA-approved program of study.
Once you clear both the stages of OBA, I.e. NCLEX-RN and OSCE tests, you can apply for your nursing registration with AHPRA and NMBA.
Completing this process can take as less as six months, provided you have prepared to clear your NCLEX-RN and OSCE exams in one go. Do not worry, as our experienced and qualified team at Nurse Assist International (NAI) is here to help you achieve your dreams.
